Some practical tips on how to look your best in portrait photography. Mobile phone or pro shots, you still want to look your best. These top tips will have you looking your best in 5 minutes.
1. Practice Makes Perfect
Whether you practice a pose in front of the mirror or use your camera’s self-timer, a big part of looking good comes with feeling comfortable. So loosen up, smile, relax.
Take dozens of photos. The last few, I have found are always the best.
If you always seem to be blinking in photos, close your eyes until the photo is about to be taken, and then open your eyes.
Stick your chin up to avoid a double chin. If you are taking your own photo, have the phone above you and look up at it.
Smile with your eyes, not with your mouth. Think of someone hot looking at your photo. Flirty, seductive eyes work. Think of something good- it always shows in your eyes.
2. Check the Lighting
Have good lighting. What is good lighting? Generally you want soft, even lighting. NOT direct sunlight. Under a tree, in some shadow, under some shade, near a window. Anywhere where this is no direct sunlight hitting your face. Overcast days are great! If you have a bit of white cardboard to reflect some light back onto your face at chest or waist height you will get a lovely flattering light.
3.Wear Flattering Clothes
Sounds like a no-brainer, but so many people have photos of them wearing the worst piece of clothing in their wardrobe.
If you are about to go out, and you are all dressed up and groomed, that can be a perfect time to take a nice photo of yourself.
4.Know Your Angles
Most people have one better side than another. Check out your favourite celebrity. Without exception, they will have more photos taken from one side than the other side. (Unless you are Tom Hardy- both sides are his good side)
The one thing though, which will have you looking your worst, is taking a selfie. That is a wide angle lens on your phone. It will make your nose, forehead and chin look big. That is why most people hate their own selfie.
Get someone to take your photo for you. As you are juggling your phone, you will pull a weird face trying to concentrate. Have a friend help you. They can also take a photo at a distance, impoving the way you look.
5. Show some emotion.
Don’t do what I used to do- open my eyes wide to make them look bigger. You will, just like I did, look crazy.
Relaxing and slightly squinting can look good. Deer-in-the-headlights is not a good look.
Think of something happy. Think of something funy or sexy.
6. Make some adjustments.
Guys, square up your shoulders to the camera. For women (sorry for being so binary) stand side-on to the camera and turn your shoulders to face the camera. Non-binary folks, do whatever the hell you want to!
I hope that helps you to look beter in photos.
Best wishes until next time,
